Float
Audio Visual Show

“float” is an audio visual show for a water-drop projection mapping system. Each pixel of the animation has materiality as a water drop, but also it is an illusion as you can see as if it is floating, levitating and animating in the air. It’s not virtual images as you may feel its coolness and even you can touch it and feel it gets your hands wet. When water drops are free from the gravity, you will lose your sense of time. And you would feel their existence right now at this moment in front of you as “materialized images”. Water Drop Projection Mapping is a technique that uses an ultra-high speed projector to project mapping on periodic water drops with precise timing, creating the illusion that each water drop is animated.

The conventional production called Waterpearl, which consists of a water drop generator and a strobe, can only control the movement of the entire water ball because the area of light cannot be limited. To solve this problem, spotlights and laser lights are sometimes used, or using several vibration frequencies of the water drop generator, but it is not possible to animate each water drop individually. Our system uses an ultra-high speed projector instead of a strobe to perform projection mapping for each water drop, and by shifting the flickering by differential time, it is possible to make water drops appear in 16 segments even between water drops. This made it possible to create animations in which individual water drops move smoothly up and down. These water drops are real so that you can actually touch. “drop” is an interactive art piece that uses Water Drop Projection Mapping system and a sensor to change the animation of water drops when you touch or hold your hand over them.
