Biography

Yan Breuleux is an artist and researcher whose work explores electroacoustic music, visual arts, and experimental media. He holds a Doctorate in Electroacoustic Music (D.Mus.) from the Université de Montréal (2014), a Master of Applied Science (M.Sc.A.) in Design and Complexity from the Faculté d’aménagement at the Université de Montréal (2006), and a Bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts from the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQÀM) (1993). From 2012 to 2024, he taught at NAD – Université du Québec à Chicoutimi (UQAC), where he contributed to graduate and undergraduate programs in art and digital creation. His teaching included courses such as Methodology, Critical Practice, Research Topics, Art History and Ideas, and Immersive Storytelling. His academic and artistic practice bridges sound, visual arts, and immersive media, with a focus on critical methodologies and interdisciplinary experimentation.

ARTWORK

The Enigma (Installation)
The Enigma installation project stages a multiplicity of visual and sonic transcoding processes inspired by the ideas of mathematician Alan Turing. The work is built from nine distinct visualizations of the same musical composition by Alain Thibault: frequency visualization, spectral visualization, data visualization, image-based visualization (4), 3D visualization, text-based visualization, point cloud visualization, pictogram visualization, and visualization of the computer’s internal processes. The artwork weaves these different forms of transcoding together according to the narrative context of the music, creating a dynamic interplay between sound, data, and visual representation. The dialogue between the synthesized voices draws on excerpts from human–machine conversations generated by an early neural conversational model developed at Google Brain by Oriol Vinyals and Quoc V. Le (2015). These exchanges—at once poetic, unsettling, and occasionally absurd—echo the work’s exploration of machine reasoning, algorithmic language, and the ambiguities of artificial intelligence.

TALK

Audiovisualism Practices: Remediating Audiovisual Content for Immersive Environment

Since 1998, Yan has developed numerous audiovisual projects exploring a wide range of relationships between sound and image across different technological and spatial environments. This presentation begins by briefly tracing the evolution of several of these works and examining how their successive adaptations and transformations led him to explore the fulldome format. Through selected projects, Yan will discuss how the transition from screen-based and performative contexts to immersive spaces has progressively shifted his research toward processes of remediation between formats across the XR continuum. The presentation concludes by reflecting on his most recent experiments with fulldome environments and the new creative and narrative possibilities they have opened up.
