Scott Hessels

Scott Hessels’ artworks have shown internationally in exhibitions focusing on technology and those presenting fine arts. His recognitions include patents for developed technologies, references in books on new media art, and coverage in cultural media like Wired and Discover. He often partners with leading science organizations like NASA, National Geographic and the Nature Conservancy, who provide the foundational data or sensor technologies into a range of phenomena. He is a Teaching Excellence Award winner and executive producer of the Extreme Environments Program which organizes art/science expeditions to remote, environmentally significant sites.

Memorial Birdsongs (Installation outdoors)
An immersive, interactive garden of natural music
As a communal safe space for healing, an interactive and immersive sound garden creates a growing community choir of recorded birdsongs, each selected by visitors to memorialize a lost loved one. Using their phones, visitors select a birdsong and painting in memory and add the name to place their song in the garden.

They also receive a digital memento of the painting and song for social media sharing. Over the course of the exhibition, the garden fills with a choir of birdsongs from around the world, each representing someone lost but remembered.

Spanning 50 years of computer evolution, the artist will show works that use emerging technologies to reveal the hidden messages in nature, space, and history. These art+science+technology hybrids ‘read’ natural forces, reactions and streaming sensors to discover patterns and structures that become drivers for immersive and interactive environments, kinetic public sculptures, generative animation, media archaeology, AR experiences, and more. With a range of scientific partners and technologies, these multi-year investigations into visualizing hidden energies have resulted in creative outcomes that imagine deeper systems and hidden meanings.
