Jan Bitzer / Polynoid

Jan Bitzer is a progressive filmmaker and director rooted in the medium of animation.

Starting with globally recognized short films 458nm and Loom, he pioneered new ways to use animation for more unseen and unique forms of storytelling that ride the line between film and art-house. His latest short film ‘Bye Bear’ is the continuation of this exploration. Jan’s work spans short films, commercials, music videos and title sequences. His recent commissioned work is the visual direction for EDM artists Anyma and Illenium at Las Vegas Sphere.

Polynoid is a German animation and directing collective formed by a group of filmmakers who met while studying at the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg. The collective includes artists such as Jan Bitzer, Ilija Brunck, Tom Weber, Csaba Letay and Fabian ‘Pit’ Pross.

Polynoid gained early international recognition through experimental short films that combined advanced 3D animation techniques with abstract and conceptual storytelling. Their works are known for blending science, art, and technology, often exploring themes such as perception, identity, and the relationship between humans and digital environments.

Over time, the collective expanded its work into commercial projects, collaborating with global brands and contributing to high-end visual productions, including award-winning and Emmy-nominated projects. Despite this commercial success, Polynoid has maintained a strong focus on artistic exploration and independent filmmaking.

Many of its members later co-founded Woodblock, a production company that serves as a platform for both commercial and original projects. Through Woodblock, Polynoid continues to produce visually innovative films, including the short Bye Bear, which marks a return to their experimental roots.

Today, Polynoid is regarded as an influential force in contemporary animation, recognized for its distinctive visual language and its ability to merge cutting-edge technology with poetic and thought-provoking narratives.

The 80s. A run-down motel. This is where a secret club of robot friends gather regularly to live out their dreams of being something else. They share a desire to be animals. On this night, it’s a goodbye party for one of them. This friend will change and leave for good.
