Jo Hyde

Jo Hyde is an artist and researcher working with sound, media, and technology.

His background is in music. He has worked in various areas, but in the late 1990s he settled on electronic music, both with and without acoustic instruments. Since then, he has diversified: sound still underpins everything he does, but collaboration has become a key feature of his work, particularly in the field of dance—both as a musician and in a broader capacity, working especially with interactive systems and telepresence. He has also moved into working with video, creating a series of fixed-media pieces and installation works, and has become increasingly involved in live performance.

He also has a long career as an academic, having delivered and led many courses across undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He is currently Emeritus Professor of Creative Music Technology at Bath Spa University.

Signal to Noise (Live A/V)
The project revisits themes central to his practice, particularly the idea of “audiovisual noise” explored in earlier works such as Zoetrope and Vanishing Point. He investigates materials that challenge or obscure perception—ranging from natural phenomena like starling murmurations to television “snow” and radio noise. In an immersive context, he experiments with rapid spinning motion in both sound and image, using ambisonic spatial techniques and rotating camera setups to create sensory ambiguity.

The performance is a new 180° version of the piece with three-channel video and ambisonic audio, developed for the 404 festival.

TALK
Art and Automation – reactions to AI in audiovisual practice.
Jo Hyde will talk about his position regarding AI (‘AI’, depending on who you talk to!) and his audiovisual work. Like many, his position is changeable and confused, ranging from excited early adoption (a decade ago) to a complete rejection; most recently settling on a more nuanced approach. Those in the audience may well have their own opinions, or just be bored of the whole topic. The talk will focus on specific AV examples, and be more about the work than AI in general.
