Biography

OcoteLab is a studio made up of digital artists and technophiles that has been developing projects based on the exploration of new creative frontiers that transcend spaces for the last 10 years. Salvador López, its founder, is a Mechatronics Engineer who graduated from ITESM, and, when he crossed over to the digital world, was soon captivated by the infinite scope of multimedia artistic installations and by the dialogue and interaction with the viewer that could be achieved through them.

As an independent artist or as part of the studio, he has participated in various commercial and cultural projects. Light intervention in natural spaces “Ecos del bosque” (“Echoes from the woods”), with the support of Development Program for Cultural Projects and Joint Investment FONCA 2016. Projections and interactive installations for the 2017 and 2018 editions of LOCOMOCIÓN festival in CDMX . Multimedia stage installation for the project “Ópera en mi Colonia” (“Opera in my colony”), with the support of the Support Program for Kids and Youth Projects FONCA 2019.

ARTWORK

Shakus
Installation

Shakus is an interactive sound sculpture with a musical approach, that resides in a surround-sound landscape. The sound of the artwork shapes the landscape, it offers a conscious contemplation exercise through active listening, which helps humans to reconnect with their natural environment. The various tubular and audio-interactive structures evoke the depth of the bamboo forests, providing the user with a space for reflection and sensory connection. Through ultrasonic testing, each tubular structure, called shaku, emits unique sound and musical environments on an individual and collective level. It uses the quadraphonic system of speakers which favors the harmonic fusion between the natural sounds that belong to the piece and the musical response of the interaction; it goes through our imagination, beyond what is purely visual and aesthetic, triggering in the viewer the need to reconnect with nature.

The active involvement of the users inside Shakus is almost symphonic, and it creates a speech of coexistence where its musical sounds harmonize, join forces, and never trespass on the soundscape of the installation. A psychoacoustic effect that reminds us of the possibility of balance between human being and the planet they inhabit.
