Biography

“Malitzin Cortes (CNDSD), musician, speculative architect, creative technologist. Hybrid process to make music and speculative narratives with TEXT{} ure As an artist, CNDSD investigates the ways in which sound, architecture, technology, and science have the capacity to be great disseminators of discovery and self-reflective devices that can trigger speculative worlds. Through processes of coding, experimental sound, CGI, video game software, installation, virtual and augmented reality and performance, it seeks to merge the physical and the digital through unprecedented models of social and political interaction, same are capable of providing new ways of relating from utopia and fiction in a constant present state of crisis and also of hope.

Her work unfolds between Live Coding, Live Cinema, XR Experiences, Creative Coding, Speculative Architecture, Experimental Music, Design and Sound Art. She has received awards and support such as ZKM Production and Research Residence – Zentrum fur Kunst und Medien Karlsruhe, Germany (2021), ADAF Athenas Award for the best 360 immersive experience and best Docufiction – Virtual Reality Doqumenta festival jury award with the piece “”Hyper D”” (2021). the Latin American Virtual Reality “”Realmix ” award by the District Institute of the Arts – Idartes Bogotá (2020). the Young National System of Art Creators of the National Fund for Culture and the Arts (2018-2019 and 2021-2022 México).

Her sound proposal and audiovisual work has been presented at international festivals and exhibitions of sound art, experimental music and media art such as Multimedia Center, Alameda Art Laboratory, Ex-Teresa Current Art, Digital Cultural Center, Spain Cultural Center Mexico and Guatemala, CMMAS, the International Conference of Live Coding , Aural Festival , Vorspiel and Transmediale Berlin, CYLAND MediaArtLab San Petersburgo, ADAF Athenas, Ars Electronica Kepler’s Garden. MUTEK Mexico, Japan, Argentina, Spain and Montreal, International Symposium on Electronic Art (ISEA) Korea and Montreal (2019 and 2020), Medialab Prado and Medialab Matadero (2019 and 2023).

ARTWORK

Becoming impermanencIA
Installation (Speculative architecture / Machine learning / Biomaterials)

The artwork “becoming impermanencIA” is a collection of biodegradable architectonic representations and an audiovisual experience that explores two main concepts: the redefinition of a significant moment in a construction and social paradigm change in the edification of cities (the construction industrialization and modern movement) and the adoption of the understanding of architecture through the lens of metabolism, where materials and energy circulate and transform, creating architectonic representations that imitate the efficiency and adaptability that is found in natural systems. The artwork is constantly evolving and it incorporates two levels of deterioration and the liquidity of the screen.

The project focuses on the representation of a condensed version of modern Latin American architecture. The traditional notions of heritage, molded by Eurocentric perspectives and guided by authorized organizations, consider factors like relevancy, inventiveness, exceptional conditions, and social and political importance. This project defies these conventional notions by distilling basic architectural elements like windows, garage doors, doors, and façade compositions that have commonly been replicated throughout Latin America. By training a machine learning model with image data, it was possible to obtain information about the predominant types of façades and their similarities in different regions of Mexico, Chile, and Argentina.

This approach goes beyond the traditional understanding that is defended by official bodies, by recognizing the influence of historical biases that emerge from specific perspectives. However, the project proposes an alternative perspective based on architectural speculation and fiction, with a sophisticated data analysis that uses pattern recognition supplied by machine learning. These tests have been able to suggest and reconstruct using the elements that were seen the most within this style.
To preserve modern architecture presents a complex challenge that often requires restoration processes that essentially start from zero. Although historic building restoration is vital, it is surprising how the life cycle of modern architecture is shorter. After only a couple of decades, many structures have deteriorated, which requires a complete reconstruction to transmit its historic importance and its deep influence; this artwork confronts these representations from a virtual and ephemeral space.
